This week the Affordable Food Alliance launched a new report “Good Food in Every Postcode”.

The Alliance is a coalition of independent networks who have come together to draw attention to the impact that Affordable Food Clubs (AFCs) are having across the UK and call for greater recognition of their role in supporting households at risk of hunger and food insecurity.

The report can be found here and in response to it, Charlotte Hill OBE, CEO of Felix said:

“Felix provides food to over 8,000 charities and community organisations across the UK and many of these are Affordable Food Clubs like pantries, social supermarkets and food clubs.

We understand what an incredible resource these places are for their local communities, not only do they provide a source of healthy, nutritious and affordable food, many of them also offer extra support such as employment advice, help with benefits, mental health and wellbeing support and activities that really bring people together.

This report shows just what an impact they are having, and Felix backs the recommendations within this report. Affordable Food Clubs should be recognised as part of a preventative community strategy. They provide a first line of defence for thousands of households, helping families stretch food budgets and preventing them from falling into crisis and must be funded appropriately.

As the government continues to focus its efforts on reducing food insecurity numbers and improving the cost of living, it is fantastic to see these organisations coming together and working collaboratively to provide valuable insight and offer practical solutions that could improve people’s lives and reduce reliance on emergency food provision.”
