Market Volunteer

Sort fruit and vegetables from wholesale markets and prepare for redistribution to communities.

Queue of people receiving food from group of people wearing high-vis and dozens of crates of fresh fruit and veg

Felix rescues fruits and vegetables at two of the UK’s largest wholesale markets: Western International Market and New Spitalfields Market. Our Market Leads, supported by a team of volunteers, rescue end-of-trading-day’ surplus food that would otherwise go to waste.

We’re looking for volunteers who don’t mind an early start to help us build relationships with the market traders and sort produce, making sure we can rescue as much good food as possible from these sites.

The fresh produce collected from the markets is then taken to a nearby Felix depot or delivered directly to local community groups.

Roles and responsibilities

  • Building relationships with market traders
  • Liaising with our Market Lead to assess offers of surplus food
  • Sorting and quality-checking produce that we’ve accepted
  • Repacking the sorted produce for onward transport to a Felix depot or directly to community groups

Requirements for the role

  • Able to arrive on-time for an early start – 06:00/07:00
  • Wear the relevant PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) provided by Felix – including safety boots, gloves and a hi-vis vest
  • Comfortable working amongst the hustle and bustle of a fast-paced market environment
  • Represent Felix as a positive, friendly and approachable ambassador
  • Follow food safety principles when handling produce
  • Comfortable carrying out physical work, including lifting, sorting and standing on your feet for extended periods of time
