Kitchen Volunteer

Turn fresh surplus ingredients into tasty, nutritious meals.

Group of people portioning food into smaller meals

Felix kitchens turn fresh surplus ingredients from our warehouses into delicious, balanced and well-presented meals. We are looking for volunteers who are keen to support in our food production environments to prepare freshly made, tasty and nutritious meals to communities across the UK.

About our kitchens

In Poplar’s East London Kitchen, around 5,000 meals are prepared and packaged every day by a dedicated team of staff and volunteers, ready to be distributed right across London. These nutritious, chef-prepared meals can be re-heated in the microwave and enjoyed within a matter of minutes. The vast majority are also freezable.

In Merseyside’s Kitchen, freshly made meals are prepared daily to nourish the staff, volunteers and any visitors to the warehouse. The kitchen is also used as a key component of Merseyside’s employability programme, providing participants with invaluable hands-on kitchen experience and impact beyond meal production.

Kitchen volunteers are also needed across Felix’s network partners in the Midlands, Lancashire & Cumbria, Aberdeen and Sussex & Surrey.

Roles and responsibilities

  • Washing fresh produce ready for production
  • Peeling, chopping and slicing vegetables
  • Taking on various roles in the food-assembly line, packing balanced and freshly made meals into plastic containers
  • Ensuring all meals are well presented
  • Fixing product labels to packaging
  • Cleaning down kitchen surfaces between tasks and thoroughly at the end of your shift ready for the next set of volunteers

It’s no exaggeration to say that Felix food is the glue that holds the wellbeing of our community together. (…) The meals take it to another level. The elderly, those just out of hospital, to a family whose 7‑year-old child is having radiotherapy who know they can come any day, and we’ll heat up dinner for them to eat in the café – they all benefit.
