Felix Food Factory Volunteer

At the Felix Food Factory, we are looking for volunteers to help us transform a wide range of difficult-to-distribute surplus into varied, long-lasting and useful products for our communities. You’ll assist with hands-on food processing, including decanting, dehydrating, freezing, sauce‑making and more. 

At certain times of year, we receive large volumes of seasonal produce – like courgettes in the summer or apples in the autumn. When community groups are already at capacity, the Food Factory takes in a portion of this excess produce and turns it into longer-lasting products – such as courgette chutney or dehydrated apple slices, ready to be sent out slowly throughout the rest of the year. 

We also receive dry goods in large, catering-sized packs which can be difficult for community groups to use. At the Food Factory, we repackage these bulk items into smaller, practical sizes – for example decanting a 40kg sack of oats into individual 1kg bags or mixing with surplus dried fruits and nuts to make our own bags of muesli. 

• Washing fresh produce ready for production
• Peeling, chopping and slicing fruits & vegetables
• Decanting catering-size products into more manageable, individual and family-size packs
• Weighing out and mixing ingredients
• Loading dehydrators and blast freezers with trolleys of food
• Assisting the team with sauce, jam and chutney production
• Fixing product labels to packaging
• Filling crates with exciting new products ready for delivery
• Cleaning down kitchen surfaces between tasks and thoroughly at the end of your shift ready for the next set of volunteers

• Complete the Food Safety Training on Felix’s Volunteer Portal
• Adhere to the strict safety guidelines of a food production site. Wear the relevant PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) provided by Felix – including overcoats, clogs, gloves, hairnets and beard nets where applicable
• Remove all jewellery, except for a plain wedding band
